Aled is our lovely big blue boy with striking amber eyes, who has a real sensitive side! He often comes across as confident and boisterous, but in reality Aled is a worried dog who needs a patient and understanding family to bring him out of his shell. He would prefer a quiet home environment without children, and possibly with another hound to support him and show him the ropes. This three-year-old ex raving greyhound is very affectionate and interactive with people, but is easily worried and needs kind and gentle handling.
On first arriving with the charity, Aled had only ever met fellow greyhounds and found different dog breeds very confusing! He would bark and lunge whenever he spotted one, and found it very difficult to behave appropriately around smaller dogs in particular. With help from our behaviour team, Aled has now learned how to remain calm when encountering other dogs out and about by checking in with his handler for a treat, rather than getting over-excited! He is now able to spend time with smaller dogs following gradual introductions and should continue to improve in his new home as long as his simple training plan is followed.
Aled still needs care around smaller dogs and other breeds, and will need to be kept on-lead and muzzled in public for the foreseeable future (and potentially for his whole life). As such, he will need a secure garden to run around in. Although Aled’s behaviour around other dogs is much improved, he is a very strong boy when excited and will need adopters who are physically able to manage him.
Aled is a real favourite at kennels and will be sorely missed, but we can’t wait to see him settled in the loving home he deserves! If you could give him the support and environment (and lashings of doggie ice cream) he needs, please get in touch.
As per our current homing situation, please only apply to adopt Aled if the following criteria applies to you:
Experienced sighthound home or willing to follow a strict training plan
No cats or other small animals in the home (*during this time we are unable to meaningfully assess for cat tolerance*)
No children under 10 in the home (*as above, this is due to the lack of ability to follow our usual stringent assessments*)
Live within England and Wales and willing to travel to our kennels in Somerset, Gloucestershire and Buckinghamshire.
