About Me

Arwen is a beautiful young lurcher who was found running down a road and taken to a pound. We saw her picture and knew we had to help. She was almost bald, emaciated, weeping sores and totally shut down. The vet said it was the worst case he had seen. Although the pound vet had said it was not mange both my vet and myself were sure it was. So a skin scrape was booked for the next day and the results came back that she was indeed suffering from fox mange with secondary bacterial infections. Every time she shook her head, blood flew from her shredded ear tips. She had also had pups recently as she was still lactating. We will never know what happened to them sadly. So armed with that knowledge, treatment began. Of course there were antibiotics and medicated baths. Mange tablets were given as kinder to her skin than a spot on treatment. She was given vet prescribed nutritional supplements. This was June 17th. Four meals a day with high calorie supplements were the order of the day. Little by little she started to improve. When Arwen came to me she was 16kg and she now weighs a healthy but still slim 20kg. Her fur for the most part has regrown. It will take a while yet for her lovely coat to become full and luxurious and some areas may not regrow because of the damage to her skin caused the mange and infection. The Antibiotics have stopped and the medicated baths will not need to continue past another 2 weeks. She has had her first and second vaccinations now and we feel she is ready for an extremely special forever home. My vet would like her health to recover more before she is neutered. There is no danger of her being contageous whatsoever but monthly treatments of Advocate are to be continued indefinitely. We think Arwen would love a nice sighthound for company and people around most of the day. She will not be cat friendly and we will not home her to families with children. If you think you can make Arwen your very special dog, please do apply. Arwen is in foster in Surrey.
